Note what the door actually does

Does it stick at the top, bottom, or side? Only in humid weather or all year? Point it out when we arrive — it saves ten minutes of diagnosis.

Have the new hardware ready

If you’ve bought a new lockset, deadbolt, or window hardware, unbox it and keep the instructions and keys together. Missing parts turn a 30-minute job into a return trip.

Clear the path

Move shoes, mats, and anything blocking the door from opening fully. Same for the window — clear the sill and the space directly in front of it.

Tell us about the pets

Doors get opened and closed a dozen times during a repair visit. If a pet is likely to bolt, let us know and we’ll coordinate the visit around a closed-room setup.

Common door & window questions

Can you fix a door that only sticks in summer?

Yes — this is usually a humidity issue combined with a tight frame. We sand or plane the door edge, adjust hinges, and often add a shim or two. The fix should hold through the humid months, and we’ll tell you if a longer-term solution (like replacing the door) is a better call.

Will new weatherstripping really save money on heating?

On a Minnesota house, yes. Old weatherstripping that’s hardened or torn can leak a surprising amount of air. We typically see a noticeable difference in how the room feels within the first cold snap, and many homeowners see $15–$40/month in savings during peak heating months.

Can you rekey a lock instead of replacing it?

We don’t rekey — that’s a locksmith service. We do replace standard deadbolts and knobsets, which is often simpler and cheaper than rekeying if the hardware is older. For rekey-only jobs, we hand you to a locksmith partner.

What about a door that squeaks?

Squeaks are usually dry hinges. We lubricate with the right product (not WD-40 — that attracts dust and makes it worse over time). If the hinge is worn or bent, we replace it. Both are quick fixes.

Do you install storm windows?

Yes, if the storm window frames and hardware are in place. We rehang storm panels each fall if you take them down in spring, and we repair the seals. Full storm window frame replacement is a carpenter job.

Can you fix a window that won’t stay open?

Yes. On double-hung windows, this is usually a sash balance or spring that’s failed. On casement windows, it’s the crank mechanism. We replace the hardware — much cheaper than a new window. If the sash is broken internally, we hand you to a window specialist.
